Fracking bills stall despite concern over oil spills A new report based on data from the Department of Environmental Protection shows that between 2015 and 2018, conventional oil drilling led to The Duke University researchers who conducted the study looked at spill data from 2005 to 2014, identifying 6,648 individual spills at 31,481 fracking sites located in the four states. On average, that’s equivalent to 55 spills per 1,000 wells in any given year. And a new report based on data from the Department of Environmental Protection shows that between 2015 and 2018, conventional oil drilling led to 35 spills, averaging nine a year. While fracking isn’t part of Florida drilling operations now, environmentalists fear its future use will contribute to a similar pattern of incidents. The activities that pose the biggest threats include spills and leaks of fracking fluids, the injection of fluids into inadequately built wells, and poor wastewater management practices. Hydraulic fracturing, more commonly referred to as fracking, is an important aspect of oil and natural gas exploration and production. However, when oil drilling and well fracturing occur there is a risk of oil and chemical spills occurring. These spills can be damaging to the environment if they seep into the ground and various water sources. The spills are notable because they occur from the fracking process itself, occurring when the water from a fracking job migrates toward and up another well that is not properly cemented. The worst-case scenario is the fluids enter groundwater aquifers, a risk that is higher when the frack hits "communicate" with older producing wells or abandoned wells.

Fracking is causing more toxic, chemical-laden water to spill into our earth than previously estimated by the EPA, a new study found. The study , which was conducted from 2004-2015 by researchers from Duke University, looked at the frequency and size of oil and gas spills in four states—Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota and Pennsylvania—and found that fracking caused 6,647 spills in 10 years. In January and February 1969, in the Santa Barbara Channel, near the city of Santa Barbara, in Southern California. It was the largest oil spill in United States waters at the time, and now ranks third after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon and 1989 Exxon Valdez spills. It remains the largest oil spill to have occurred in the waters off California. In addition to air and water pollution, fracking also increases the potential for oil spills, which can harm the soil and surrounding vegetation. Fracking may cause earthquakes due to the high pressure used to extract oil and gas from rock and the storage of excess wastewater on site. An alarming new study has identified 6,600 chemical spills related to hydraulic fracturing in just four US states over a ten year period. The finding shows that fracking is far messier than Researchers examined state-level spill data to characterize spills associated with unconventional oil and gas development at 31,481 wells hydraulically fractured or "fracked" in the four states Frac companies and the oil and gas companies they work for make it a priority to prevent spills of chemicals, flowback fluid or other hydrocarbon products during fracking to protect land, vegetation, water bodies and groundwater. As a result, spills during fracking activities are relatively rare. The evidence is surfacing from the Gulf of Mexico, two years after the major BP oil spill, to the waters of the Susquehanna River, heavily impacted by a decade of Marcellus Shale fracking. Fishers off the Gulf Coast have reported that up to 50 percent of grouper and red snapper caught have large open sores, strange black streaks and lesions never seen before.

A controversial method of oil and natural gas extraction known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has resulted in thousands of spills in four states over a 10-year period, a new study finds.
